Penarth is a small Victorian sea side resort with useful shops and pleasant restaurants and is well known for its parks and gardens. Despite its period charm it features on a surprising number of web sites, click on the picture for links to some of them including a 'Whats on locally' site, our Penarth Art Galleries, online newspaper and guided walks through the town.

Cosmeston Medieval Village, about 2 miles away; step back in time in this realistic evocation of a bygone age. Tickets from the visitor centre at Cosmeston; guided tours every hour on the hour.

There are two islands that can be seen from Rock House,
the tiny island of
Flat Holm just five miles away, is the nearer and the Welsh one, (the other is Steep Holm,)
It has been a sanctuary for Vikings, silver miners, monks and smugglers.
There are scheduled visits from April to October

Barry Island Railway Heritage centre
dedicated to ‘The Age of Steam’.

Riding: there are a number of local riding establishments including one that takes rides round Cosmeston country park.

Parks and Gardens near Rock House

The Millennium stadium, is about 4 miles from Rock House, only 10 minutes by car. Home of Welsh rugby and until recently, of international Football.


The National Museum of Wales in Cardiff has a wonderful collection of impressionist paintings and examples of ceramics including rare Welsh porcelain.

Cardiff Bay is only 3 miles away from Rock House and has a cinema complex with bars restaurants and 10 pin bowling; on the waterfront itself there are many other restaurants including Harry Ramsdens; a restored Norwegian Church now a coffee shop and arts centre (former patron Roald Dahl); and for children from four to 84, the Techniquest science activity centre / planetarium is a great fun place,

Boats and Ferries Before the barrage was built, boats spent half their time on the mud but now there are many opportunities to get on the water near Rock House
