Il Mediterraneo - Good variety of genuine Italian food, pasta, chicken, lamb, veal and fish. Well cooked and delicious (however spicy prawns are very spicy). Helpings are very generous, few of us have managed three courses, children's portions available and are big enough for those adults with modest appetites, there is usually a very moderately priced lunch menu.
Surprisingly the restaurant charges you for bread.
At weekends the restaurant can be very busy and it is best to book.
Service is very good: when tipped off by one of our guests that it was David's birthday, the staff (very attractive young women) all came and sang 'Happy Birthday'. The old, frail and very young are very well cared for, and they have high chairs.
For a view over the Bristol Channel, ask for a table in the window upstairs. (tel: 029 2070 3428 fax: 029 2070 30999) or click on the name to visit their web site. There is an area in front of the restaurant where one can have a drink and a lunchtime snack and watch the world go by.
Chandlers - Bar meals in the pub and steak, chops and seafood in the restaurant (generous portions). Good value. They have high chairs for children.
We go there mostly for lunch time bar meals which are very good particularly in the summer, sitting outside watching the world and the boats go by.
Guests have commented on steaks that melt in the mouth and very good service in the evening. (tel: 029 2070 3401)Rabiottis - A traditional seaside day time restaurant: breakfast, lunch, tea and icecream. Open mornings and afternoons but not open in the evenings
Piersons
Some guests and a few friends have eaten here and reported that it is very good, no further information at present.
Snackeries
There is a fish and chip shop on the Esplanade, also fish and chips, just chips, pizzas, ice cream, and much else is available from the small establishments either side of the entrance to the pier and on the pier itself, good sea side stuff!

Indian restaurants:
Paramount Tandoori - in Station Approach reliably good food and service
Jaflon 41 Albert Road tel 029 2070 1133 ; Bangladeshi cuisine, smart modern stylish decor; we have been several times and think the food is very very good.
Prince of India Tandoori - Ludlow Lane; closed Mondays and Tuesdays; a very small restaurant, particularly pleasant food and service; helpings large enough for a doggy bag for the next day's lunch! (you can keep it in our fridge)
Tropical Tandoori - Windsor Terrace. Pleasant, near the bus stop and lots of room. Click on the name to visit their web site..
We are regular customers of all of these and recommend them all!
Other town centre restaurants:
Villa Napoli - Plymouth Road, past Natwest bank. Italian. Food wonderful, very busy, best to book (029 20 706701)
The Railway Pub - Between Plymouth Road and Stanwell Road, by the traffic lights. Good lunches at modest prices (steak and chips a speciality)
The Bear's Head Pub - Town centre, typical Weatherspoon, crowded, no music, good food at reasonable prices available for most of the day.
The Olive Tree Restaurant - 21 Glebe Street; we have eaten here, plain exterior but the service is very cheerful and well informed with superb food; the owner tells us it will be in Michelin Guide (crossed knife & fork) next year. When we went, there was a three course fixed price menu for about £20 and pleasant wine started at a little under £12.00 but their web site gives up to date information: click on the name to visit their web site or ring 029 2070 7077.
The Corner House - on the corner of Arcot Street and Plassey Street.
This has been a super restaurant, however, the owners relocated to France and the restaurant was closed temporarily.
It has now re-opened under the management of the previous, very good, chef.
We and some guests have been there and the verdict is that it is still very good indeed, very welcoming atmosphere a few middle european items, Beef Stroganoff for example have entered the menu among the more traditional such as braised shank of lamb, good wine list and very reasonable prices.
Open Tuesday to Saturday, lunches are 12.30 to 3.00 and evenings from 6.30 . Best to book, essential at weekends:
tel: 029 2070 7774Windsor Tea rooms - in Windsor Arcade do a good line in coffee, lunches and teas
North meets South
This is the similar looking establishment opposite Windsor Tea Rooms: coffee, lunches and teas.Guests have commented very favourably on the interesting food.
Washington Gallery - in Stanwell Road, opposite the Library, sells modern art, books and objets as well as good coffee!
Cibos - in Stanwell Road just before Station Approach. Evenings only, closed Tuesdays. Italian, very good food, pleasant efficient service, the stripped pine floor and lack of soft furnishings make it a bit noisy and echoey. Cheerful fun atmosphere. Much the same price as Villa Napoli and Mediterraneo.
Baron's Court - On the large roundabout as you leave Penarth. A Beefeater, nice old building, log fire, good 'Beeteater food' & friendly service in the restaurant; bar food not cheap and service may be slow.
The Oyster Catcher - Penarth marina, almost opposite Tesco's. Views of the river, large no smoking area and all facilities for babies and children, plus good food and efficient service. A good place if you are in a hurry.
El Puerto and La Marina are two more or less Spanish restaurants sharing the old Customs House building our side of the barrage. The downstairs one is where its all happenning (a bit noisy) upstairs is calmer, excellent food (they probably share the kitchen), similar prices to Penarth sea front restaurants. 029 2070 5544 for La Marina, 029 2070 5551 for El Puerto for customers views try clicking on El Puerto
The Bush Inn - Thatched pub with excellent food in the tiny village of St. Hilary off the A48, near Cowbridge. One of our favourite eating places (01446 292132)
Mermaid Quay - There are many restaurants; so far we have only visited the Turkish; all glass walls at the end of a jetty in the harbour, good food, attentive service but at a Mediterranean pace.
Cardiff - also many restaurants, we particularly like the Owain Glendwr pub for lunch as although it is often crowded and busy, the food is good and worth the wait and the staff are helpful.
If there's nothing here you fancy there's plenty further afield, just ask for info!
